A registrar may deny a transfer when the domain is within 60 days of its initial registration or a previous registrar transfer. A change to the registrant name, organisation or email address can also create a 60-day Change of Registrant lock.

This is the standard rule for many generic domains, including
.com
. For
.in
, the registry also says a registrar-to-registrar transfer is not allowed during the first 60 days after creation. Read the ICANN transfer FAQ and the Registry.in transfer policy information if you are unsure which rule applies to your extension.

Do not wait until the last few days before expiry. An expired domain may still be transferable in some cases, but a name that has entered a redemption period normally has to be restored by the current registrar first. Starting while the domain is active gives you time to correct an email, lock or payment problem.

What you need before the transfer

Have these items ready before you open the transfer page at the new registrar:

Access to the account at the current registrar.

Access to the domain owner or transfer-contact email address.

The domain name without
https://
or
www
.

The domain unlocked for transfer.

The EPP, Auth-Code, AuthInfo or transfer code.

A copy of the current DNS records, especially the website and email records.

A payment method accepted by the new registrar.

An EPP code is a security code that proves you are allowed to move the domain. Names vary by registrar, but EPP code, Auth-Code, transfer code and AuthInfo generally refer to the same transfer credential. ICANN says the registrar must provide an Auth-Code within five calendar days when its control panel does not let you create one yourself; its Auth-Code guidance explains the requirement.

Step 1: Check the domain and copy its DNS records

Why this matters: You want to confirm that the name can move and preserve the settings that connect it to your website, email and other services.

Sign in to the current registrar and check:

the domain creation date and last transfer date;

the expiry date;

the registrant and transfer-contact email address;

the current nameservers;

whether the domain is marked as locked or prohibited from transfer; and

whether the domain has a payment hold, dispute or other status that blocks a transfer.

Now export the DNS zone if the registrar provides an export option. If not, make a written copy of each record. At minimum, record the following:

Record

What to save

Why it matters

A and AAAA

Website IP addresses

Connects the domain to the web server

CNAME

Aliases and
www
target

Keeps subdomains and aliases working

MX

Mail server names and priorities

Routes incoming email

TXT

SPF, DKIM, DMARC and verification values

Protects email delivery and service verification

Other records

SRV, CAA and subdomain records

Preserves special services and certificate rules

If your nameservers already point to your hosting provider or a separate DNS service, the registrar transfer normally does not require changing them. If the old registrar also provides the DNS, copy the zone to the new DNS provider before the old DNS service is removed.

Success looks like: You know the domain is eligible, you can receive transfer emails, and you have a record of every DNS setting you may need to restore.

Step 2: Unlock the domain and get the EPP code

Why this matters: The lock blocks unauthorised transfers, while the EPP code identifies the domain holder to the gaining registrar.

In the current registrar’s domain management screen:

Open the settings for the exact domain.

Turn off the registrar lock, transfer lock or
clientTransferProhibited
setting.

Save the change and wait for the dashboard to show the domain as unlocked.

Choose the option labelled EPP code, Auth-Code, transfer code or AuthInfo.

Copy the code exactly as shown, including capital letters, numbers and hyphens.

Some registrars display the code immediately. Others send it to the registered email address or provide it only after a request. Do not share the code in a public ticket, chat group or screenshot. It is a transfer credential, not a general domain password.

If you cannot find the current registrar, use ICANN Lookup and check the Registrar field. For a
.in
domain, Registry.in says the authorisation code comes from the current sponsoring registrar, not directly from the registry.

Success looks like: The lock is off, the EPP code is copied privately, and the transfer-contact email inbox is ready for approval messages.

Step 3: Start the transfer at the new registrar

Why this matters: Only the new, or gaining, registrar can submit the transfer request to the registry.

Open the new registrar’s domain transfer page and follow these actions:

Enter the domain, such as
example.com
, without
www
.

Select transfer rather than new registration.

Enter the EPP/Auth code from the current registrar.

Review the transfer price, renewal date and any privacy or DNS options.

Pay for the transfer and submit the request.

HostKarle currently lists a
.com
transfer at ₹1,259/yr, billed per year at the renewal rate. Its
.in
domain page lists transfer and renewal at ₹889/yr. Check the cart on the day because prices can change, and confirm that you are transferring the existing name rather than registering a second domain.

For a
.com
transfer to HostKarle, use the HostKarle .com domain page. If you are moving an Indian
.in
name, see the HostKarle .in domain page. You can also start from the HostKarle domain search.

Success looks like: The new registrar shows a pending transfer, and the payment or order confirmation contains the correct domain name.

Step 4: Approve the transfer and wait

Why this matters: The approval email is the ownership check that allows the registry and both registrars to complete the move.

Watch the registrant and transfer-contact inboxes, including spam and promotional folders. You may receive an authorisation email from the new registrar and a confirmation or approval message from the current registrar. Open the message only when you have checked the domain name, then approve the transfer using the link or button supplied.

Do not cancel the transfer unless you intend to keep the domain at the current registrar. Keep both registrar accounts active while the request is pending, and do not change the registrant email, nameservers or DNS records halfway through the process.

For
.in
, Registry.in says the transfer completes in five 24-hour periods after the new registrar starts it. For many
.com
transfers, approval can make the move faster, but allowing 5–7 calendar days is a sensible planning window when the registrars use different confirmation steps. ICANN’s transfer rules also define a five-day response period for the registrar of record.

Success looks like: The new registrar marks the domain as active under its account, and the old registrar no longer shows it as pending or sponsored.

Step 5: Verify the registrar, expiry date and DNS

Why this matters: A completed transfer changes the registrar of record, but it does not automatically prove that your website, email and connected services are still configured correctly.

After the new registrar confirms completion:

Check the domain’s registrar name and status in the new account or a reliable lookup service.

Compare the expiry date with the date shown before the transfer.

Confirm that the nameservers are still the ones you intended to use.

Open the website on both the root domain and the
www
version.

Send a test email to the domain and reply from a domain mailbox if you use one.

Check important subdomains and any service that uses a TXT verification record.

Turn the registrar lock back on after the transfer is complete.

If you are also moving the website to HostKarle, keep the registrar transfer and hosting migration as separate tasks. Follow the HostKarle WordPress migration guide for the site files and database, and change nameservers only after the new hosting account is ready.

Does transferring a domain extend the expiry date?

Usually, yes. A successful registrar-to-registrar transfer normally adds one year to the registration term, up to the registry’s maximum term. ICANN’s transfer policy describes a one-year extension for a holder-authorised transfer, and Registry.in states that a
.in
registrar-to-registrar transfer adds one year, charged to the gaining registrar.

The transfer year is not a free hosting month. It is a domain registration year included in the transfer charge. If the domain is already close to the maximum allowed registration term, the full extra year may not be added. Check the new registrar’s checkout and the final expiry date rather than relying only on the order email.

Keep your website and email running during the move

A registrar transfer changes who manages the registration. It does not require a nameserver change. Your website and email should continue using the same DNS while the transfer is pending if you leave the nameservers and DNS records alone.

The main risk is confusing a registrar move with a DNS move. Before transferring, copy the zone and make sure you know where it is hosted. If the old registrar hosts the DNS zone, create the same records at the new DNS provider before the old zone is removed. Give special attention to MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records because a missing mail record can affect sending or receiving even when the website still loads.

Keep the old hosting and email service active until you have checked the new registrar, nameservers, website, SSL certificate and email flow. This is also a good time to save a backup of your website; the HostKarle guide to migrating a WordPress website covers the separate site move.

Common transfer problems and fixes

“The domain is locked”

Return to the current registrar and disable the transfer lock. If the dashboard does not let you remove it, ask the registrar to remove the lock and provide the Auth-Code. ICANN says registrars must provide a reasonable way to remove the lock, and the Auth-Code when required, within five calendar days.

“The EPP code is invalid”

Request a fresh code and paste it without spaces before or after it. Check that you started the transfer for the same extension and domain, then submit the new code at the gaining registrar.

“The transfer is blocked by a 60-day rule”

Check the original registration date, last transfer date and the date of any recent registrant contact change. Waiting is usually the only option for a mandatory lock. If you only need to change hosting, you can usually keep the registrar and update the nameservers instead.

“I did not receive the approval email”

Check the registered contact email, spam folder and the order details at the new registrar. Ask the gaining registrar to resend the message. Do not approve a message for a different domain.

“The site or email stopped after transfer”

Compare the current nameservers and DNS records with the copy you made before Step 1. Restore the A, CNAME, MX and TXT records at the DNS provider that is actually authoritative for the domain. The registrar transfer itself is usually not the reason to change those records.

Transfer your domain

Move your domain with confidence

Transfer a .com to HostKarle at the listed renewal rate and keep your domain settings under control.

Transfer a .com

FAQ

What is an EPP code?

An EPP code is a security code supplied by the current registrar for an authorised domain transfer. It may also be called an Auth-Code, AuthInfo code, transfer code or transfer key. Enter it at the new registrar when you start the transfer.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Allow about 5–7 calendar days for a registrar-to-registrar transfer, although an approval can shorten the wait. Registry.in specifically says
.in
transfers complete in five 24-hour periods after initiation. The actual time depends on the domain extension, the registrar workflow and how quickly you approve the emails.

Can I transfer a domain during the 60-day lock?

Usually not when the lock is caused by a new registration, a previous transfer or a recent change of registrant information. Confirm the reason and end date with the current registrar. If you only want different hosting, changing hosting or nameservers may avoid a registrar transfer.

Will my website and email stop during a domain transfer?

They should keep working when the nameservers and DNS records remain unchanged. Before starting, copy the DNS zone and check A, CNAME, MX and TXT records. Keep the old services active until the transfer and a website-and-email test are complete.

Does a domain transfer add one year?

For a normal successful registrar transfer, the registration term generally gains one year, subject to the maximum term and the extension’s rules. The gaining registrar charges for that transfer year, so review the final price and expiry date before and after the move.

{“@context”: “https://schema.org”, “@type”: “FAQPage”, “mainEntity”: [{“@type”: “Question”, “name”: “What is an EPP code?”, “acceptedAnswer”: {“@type”: “Answer”, “text”: “An EPP code is a security code supplied by the current registrar for an authorised domain transfer.
