Is Unlimited Hosting Really Unlimited? Fair Use Explained

Unlimited hosting usually means no fixed cap on selected plan features, not unlimited server capacity. HostKarle Unlimited gives you unlimited websites, databases, email accounts and bandwidth, but storage is 300 GB and CPU, memory and processes remain shared fairly on a shared server.

Short answer: unlimited does not mean infinite

The word unlimited describes a quota in the plan. It does not remove the physical limits of storage, processor time, memory, file systems, mail delivery or the shared server itself.

Think of it like this: a plan can allow you to create as many website entries as you need, while the account still has a fixed amount of disk space and a fair-use boundary for server work. A simple five-page site and a busy WooCommerce catalogue may both count as one website, but they do not place the same load on the account.

That is why the right question is not “Is unlimited hosting really unlimited?” It is “Which things are unlimited, which are fixed, and what happens when my account needs more shared resources?”

HostKarle publishes those distinctions on its unlimited hosting plan page, rather than treating every resource as unlimited.

What “unlimited” usually covers

Hosts use the label for features that can be counted or measured at the account level. Common examples are the number of websites, databases, mailboxes and data transfer.

FeatureWhat “unlimited” may meanWhat you should still check
WebsitesNo fixed number of website slots on the planStorage, file count and combined workload
DatabasesNo fixed database quotaDatabase size, backups and query load
Email accountsNo fixed number of mailboxesMail storage, sending rules and spam controls
BandwidthNo traffic meter or overage charge for normal visitorsFair-use wording and prohibited uses
StorageOften not unlimited, even on an “unlimited” planThe exact GB quota and what uses it
CPU and memoryShared fairly rather than assigned without limitResource policy, processes and peak usage

“Unlimited bandwidth” is mainly useful for ordinary website visitors. If a blog post gets shared widely or a shop receives a seasonal rush, you do not want to calculate every gigabyte. It does not turn a hosting account into a general file-distribution service.

Likewise, unlimited email accounts means you can create mailboxes for staff, domains or projects within the plan’s rules. It does not mean unlimited bulk email, unlimited mailbox storage or permission to send unsolicited messages.

The plan description matters more than the badge. Read the storage figure, resource policy, backup rules and acceptable-use language before paying.

HostKarle’s shared-hosting page shows the Unlimited plan’s website, storage, database, email and bandwidth allowances.

The hidden limits that matter

Storage is still a number

Storage is the easiest limit to understand because it is shown in gigabytes. It includes more than the images visible on your website: WordPress core files, themes, plugins, uploads, databases, email data, logs and copies you keep in the account can all consume space.

HostKarle Unlimited includes 300 GB of pure SSD storage. That is a substantial allowance for normal business websites, blogs, portfolios and client sites, but it is not infinite. A collection of large video files, downloadable archives or old backup copies can use it faster than a group of small brochure sites.

Keep backups organised and remove obsolete staging copies. HostKarle provides self-service backup and restore tools, so download important copies and keep a separate copy rather than treating the live account as an unlimited archive.

DirectAdmin’s documentation also shows why backups and quotas need attention: the panel counts account data, and backup work can temporarily involve additional space while files are assembled. Read the DirectAdmin backup guidance when planning large transfers or restores.

Inodes are a file-count limit

An inode is filesystem metadata associated with a file or directory. In practical hosting terms, thousands of small files can matter even when their combined size is modest. WordPress cache folders, image thumbnails, plugin files, email messages and backup fragments can all increase the count.

The Linux kernel documentation on inodes explains that an inode stores metadata for a file, separate from the directory entry. You do not need to understand the filesystem internals to use the idea: ask whether your plan has a file or inode limit, where you can see usage, and what counts towards it.

Do not assume that “unlimited websites” means you can create an unlimited number of empty development copies. Each copy adds files, directories, databases and often scheduled tasks. A clean account with 20 well-managed sites may be a better fit than an untidy account with fewer sites but thousands of leftover files.

CPU, memory and processes are shared

Every request to load a page, run PHP, query a database, generate an image or execute a scheduled task uses server resources. On shared hosting, those resources are shared across accounts, so a plan normally applies fair-use rules to protect the wider service.

The practical measures can include CPU time, memory, concurrent processes, entry processes, disk input/output and database workload. Hosts may describe them in different ways and may not publish the same numbers. Ask for the current policy if your website runs imports, crawlers, large reports, frequent backups or other heavy jobs.

WordPress’s official PHP optimisation guidance notes that shared-hosting limits are usually set at server level and may not be adjustable by the account owner. It also explains that scheduled WordPress tasks consume resources, even though normal WP-Cron work is designed to be lightweight.

This is not a special problem with one brand. It is the basic trade-off of shared hosting: you get a managed environment at a lower price, while the plan must prevent one account from monopolising the server.

Email has two separate limits

Email limits are often confused because there are two different things to measure:

  1. Number of mailboxes: how many addresses you can create, such as accounts@, support@ or name@yourdomain.in.
  2. Sending behaviour: how many messages can be sent in a period, how large they can be, and whether the server accepts bulk or automated mail.

An unlimited mailbox allowance is useful for an agency, school or office with many domains. It does not make shared hosting suitable for a newsletter list or transactional system sending a large volume. Use a specialised email-delivery service when your application needs high-volume campaigns, and follow its authentication and consent requirements.

For normal business email, ask whether mailbox storage is included in the account quota, whether attachments count towards storage, and whether there is a published hourly sending rule. Never promise a client “unlimited email” without defining whether you mean addresses or sending volume.

Who actually needs an unlimited plan?

Unlimited hosting is a sensible choice when the number of sites, databases or mailboxes is the problem you are trying to solve.

Agencies and freelancers

A web agency may manage a growing list of client websites under one account. Unlimited websites remove the need to buy another plan for client number 11, while unlimited databases make it easier to keep separate WordPress installations and staging copies.

Plan each client site separately, allocate storage, and keep credentials and backups organised. Hosting client sites under one account is not the same as giving every client a separate control-panel login.

Colleges and organisations

A college, trust or multi-department organisation may need many small sites and email addresses. A single plan can simplify the bill and administration when the sites are related and the combined storage remains suitable.

Estimate storage for documents, images, mail and backups before you order. An unlimited site count does not remove the need to budget for the 300 GB storage allowance.

Domain portfolios and blog networks

If you build several small blogs or landing pages, unlimited websites can be more convenient than counting every domain. Give each site its own folder, database and SSL configuration, and monitor the account as the network grows.

Who does not need it

If you have one business site, portfolio or tuition-centre website, an unlimited plan may add capacity you will not use. HostKarle Basic supports one website, while Professional supports up to 10. Choosing the smallest plan that fits your current work can keep the annual bill simple.

What HostKarle Unlimited includes

HostKarle’s Unlimited plan is a shared-hosting plan for websites and email. Its published allowances are:

Included itemHostKarle Unlimited
WebsitesUnlimited
SSD storage300 GB
MySQL databasesUnlimited
SubdomainsUnlimited
Business email accountsUnlimited
BandwidthUnlimited, subject to fair use
Control panelDirectAdmin
Yearly-plan price₹299/mo; ₹3,588 billed yearly
Monthly billing₹499/mo

The plan also includes free SSL for every domain, Softaculous for one-click WordPress and other applications, a PHP version selector, free migration and self-service backup and restore tools. The listed hosting price renews at the signup price. A three-year option is ₹7,164 total, equivalent to ₹199/mo for that three-year billing term; do not treat that equivalent as a monthly subscription price.

The main reason to choose it is the combination of unlimited site, database and mailbox allowances. The main planning number is the 300 GB storage quota, followed by your account’s shared-resource usage. If you have fewer than 10 sites and 20 mailboxes, compare Professional first: it is ₹149/mo and ₹1,788 billed yearly.

See the HostKarle shared hosting plans for the current allowances and billing selectors. If you are changing providers, our guide to migrating a WordPress website to HostKarle covers the preparation and testing work.

How to choose an unlimited hosting plan

Use this checklist before comparing a plan badge or paying an annual invoice:

  1. List your sites. Count live websites, staging copies, landing pages and planned client sites.
  2. Estimate storage. Add current files, databases, email, media, logs and the backups you intend to keep online.
  3. Count mailboxes. Separate the number of addresses from the volume of messages you need to send.
  4. Ask about resource policy. Get the current position on CPU, memory, processes, file count, database load and email sending.
  5. Check the panel. Confirm that you can create domains, databases, SSL certificates, mailboxes and backups yourself.
  6. Read acceptable use. “Unlimited” for websites does not mean permission to store unrelated files, run abusive scripts or send spam.
  7. Compare the whole bill. Record the amount due today, the renewal price, the domain cost and the billing period. Our guide to web hosting renewal price in India explains how to compare the second- and third-year cost.

You should be able to answer three questions in writing: what is unlimited, what is fixed, and what would make the account exceed fair use? If the provider cannot explain those points, keep looking for a clearer plan.

Common mistakes with unlimited hosting

Treating storage as unlimited

Check the storage figure even when the headline says unlimited websites or bandwidth. Remove old backups and unused staging sites before they become the largest part of your account.

Hosting large files unrelated to a website

Shared hosting is designed for web files, databases and normal email. It is not an unlimited personal drive or a backup warehouse. Store large archives and media in a service designed for that purpose.

Ignoring the number of files

A small file can still count as a filesystem object. Clean plugin caches, temporary exports, mail folders and generated thumbnails as part of routine maintenance.

Assuming unlimited email means unlimited sending

Mailbox creation and outbound delivery are different controls. Use proper consent, authentication and a suitable delivery service for newsletters or application mail at scale.

Choosing by site count alone

Thirty tiny sites may fit comfortably, while one poorly optimised application can use more shared resources than expected. Choose for the combined workload and keep a backup before major changes.

FAQ

Is unlimited hosting really unlimited?

No hosting plan has infinite storage or server capacity. “Unlimited” normally removes a fixed quota for selected features, while storage, CPU, memory, file count, email sending and fair-use rules still need checking.

What does unlimited bandwidth mean in web hosting?

It usually means the plan does not charge by the gigabyte for normal website visitors. It does not permit unrelated file storage, abusive traffic or activity that uses a disproportionate share of the shared service.

Does unlimited hosting include unlimited storage?

Not necessarily. HostKarle Unlimited includes 300 GB of SSD storage, while websites, databases, mailboxes and bandwidth are listed as unlimited subject to fair use.

Is unlimited hosting good for multiple websites?

Yes, when you run more than 10 sites, need more than 20 mailboxes or want to avoid counting databases. For one to ten normal sites, compare a smaller plan first and use the saved budget for the resources you will actually use.

What is an inode limit in hosting?

An inode is filesystem metadata associated with a file or directory. An inode limit is therefore a practical file-count limit: many small files, emails, cache items and backup fragments can matter even when total storage is still available.
