How to Buy a Domain Name in India: UPI Guide

To buy domain name india, you need to choose a memorable name, select the right extension and check its renewal price before paying. This guide shows the complete process with a HostKarle domain search, UPI checkout and the nameservers you need if you are using hosting.

What you need before you buy

Keep these things ready before opening the checkout:

  1. A short name: Use your business, tuition centre, personal brand or project name. Avoid spaces, confusing spellings and a name that is too narrow if you may expand later.
  2. A preferred extension: Most Indian buyers start with .in, .co.in or .com. You can keep a second choice ready if your first name is unavailable.
  3. An email address and mobile number: Use details you check regularly. Renewal reminders, order details and any contact-verification message must reach you.
  4. A payment method: UPI through Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or your bank’s app works at checkout. Cards and net banking are also available.
  5. A hosting decision: Hosting is not required to register a domain. You can buy the name first and connect it to a website later, or add hosting in the same order.

The .in registry explains that registrations are completed through accredited registrars, not directly through the registry. For a normal business or personal website, use a registrar’s search and checkout; the separate official gov.in registration procedure applies to eligible government organisations and is not the process for an ordinary .in domain.

Step 1: Search the name

Why this matters: The domain is the address people type, share and remember. Checking the exact spelling first prevents you from paying for a name you did not intend to register.

Do this:

  1. Open HostKarle’s domain search page.
  2. Enter the main part of your name, such as malabarbakes or siligurituition.
  3. Search without spaces. Try the plain name first, then a simple variation if it is unavailable.
  4. Review the available extensions and the price shown for each one.
Search a name and compare the available domain extensions.

Success looks like: You have at least one available name that is easy to say, easy to type and clearly connected to your work. Read the spelling once more before adding it to the cart.

If the exact name is taken, do not add random numbers or several hyphens immediately. Try a clear word that describes your location, service or brand, then check whether the matching social handles and business name are sensible for you to use.

Step 2: Pick the extension

Why this matters: The extension changes how the name is understood and what you pay every year. Choose for your audience and long-term use, not only the lowest first-year price.

ExtensionHostKarle priceA sensible use
.co.in₹709/yrAn India-focused company, shop or trading business
.in₹889/yrA business, professional or personal project serving India
.com₹1,259/yrA brand that may serve customers outside India or wants the familiar global extension
.org₹1,439/yrAn organisation, trust, community or non-profit project
.net₹1,519/yrA technology or network-related project when the preferred name is not available elsewhere

For an Indian audience, .in is usually the straightforward choice. .co.in is a lower-cost Indian option, while .com makes sense when you expect a wider audience or want the standard global address. The official .IN Registry provides the registry service through registrars and explains that domain record changes, including nameservers, are requested through your registrar.

You can also register more than one extension when protecting a business name matters. Start with the extension you will actually publish, and only add another if you have a clear reason to keep it.

Success looks like: You have selected one extension whose audience, spelling and yearly cost you understand. The full domain should look correct when read aloud, for example yourbrand.in, not just the name before the dot.

Step 3: Check the renewal price

Why this matters: A first-year discount can hide a much higher second-year bill. The renewal price is the cost you should use when budgeting for a business website that you expect to keep.

Do this:

  1. On the search results or checkout page, find both the registration and renewal figures.
  2. Compare the price for one year of registration with the price from year two onwards.
  3. Prefer an extension with a renewal price you can accept before you pay.
  4. Check the final cart total and make sure the correct domain is selected.

At HostKarle, .in is ₹889/yr at registration and renewal, .co.in is ₹709/yr at registration and renewal, and .com is ₹1,259/yr at registration and renewal. Some other extensions are promotional in year one: for example, .online is ₹739 for the first year and ₹3,539 at renewal. That low first-year figure is not a low long-term cost.

For a deeper explanation of how introductory offers work, see HostKarle’s guide to cheap domain names. Prices can change, so treat the cart as the final check before payment.

Success looks like: You know the registration price, the renewal price and the extension you are buying. There are no surprise add-ons in your cart that you did not choose.

Step 4: Pay by UPI and verify your contact details

Why this matters: Correct contact details keep your invoices, renewal reminders and domain notices in the right inbox. UPI lets you complete the purchase in rupees from the app you already use.

Do this:

  1. Add the available domain to your cart and choose the registration period.
  2. Create or sign in to your client account.
  3. Enter your name, mobile number and email address carefully. Check every letter in the domain again before continuing.
  4. Select Razorpay or Cashfree when the payment gateway opens, then choose UPI.
  5. On a laptop, scan the QR code with your UPI app. On a phone, enter your UPI ID or open the payment request in your UPI app.
  6. Approve the amount with your UPI PIN. Do not approve a payment for a different amount or a different merchant.
  7. Return to the checkout or invoice page and wait for the payment status to update.
Choose UPI at checkout and approve the payment from your UPI app.

HostKarle supports UPI, cards and net banking for domain orders. You can read the UPI payment walkthrough if you want to see how the payment screen works before starting.

Success looks like: The invoice shows as paid, the order confirmation reaches your email and the new domain appears in your client area. Open the confirmation message and complete any contact verification requested there.

Do not close the browser and pay again just because your UPI app was slow to return. First check the invoice status and your bank transaction history. If money was deducted but the invoice still looks unpaid, keep the UTR number from the UPI app and use it when raising a billing ticket.

Step 5: Point it at your hosting

Why this matters: Registration gives you control of the address; DNS connects that address to a website, email service or another destination. The domain and hosting are separate parts of the setup.

If you bought hosting with the domain: Choose the hosting plan in the same checkout. The domain can be connected to the new hosting account as part of the order, so check the welcome email for your client-area and control-panel details.

If you bought only the domain:

  1. Log in to your domain client area.
  2. Open the domain’s DNS or nameserver settings.
  3. Choose custom nameservers.
  4. Enter these two values exactly:
   ns1.fastnsdns.com
   ns2.fastnsdns.com
  1. Save the change and wait for DNS updates to reach different networks.

If your website is hosted somewhere else, use that provider’s nameservers instead. Do not mix two providers’ nameservers unless you know which DNS service should be authoritative. The HostKarle nameserver guide covers the same change in more detail.

Success looks like: Your domain opens the intended website, and the browser shows the correct address. DNS changes may take a few hours to appear everywhere, so test from a mobile network as well as your usual Wi-Fi. If you bought hosting later, confirm that the domain is added to the hosting account before testing.

Verify the purchase

Use this short checklist after payment:

  • The domain spelling and extension match your order.
  • The invoice is marked paid and the transaction is visible in your UPI app.
  • The domain appears in your client area with an expiry date.
  • Your account email and mobile number are correct.
  • Any requested contact verification is complete.
  • Your nameservers are correct if you are connecting external hosting.
  • The domain opens the intended site after DNS has updated.

You do not need to buy hosting on the same day. If you are still choosing a website platform, read what web hosting is first and keep the domain in your client area until you are ready.

Common mistakes

Choosing only by the first-year price

Compare the registration and renewal columns before paying. A ₹739 first-year .online domain that renews at ₹3,539 is very different from a .in or .com whose registration and renewal price is the same at HostKarle.

Typing the wrong spelling

Domains are non-refundable, so copy the name carefully and read the complete address, including the extension. A missing letter or an extra hyphen can send visitors to a different address.

Using an email you do not check

The email is important for invoices, expiry reminders and verification messages. Use an address you control and keep its password secure.

Confusing a domain with hosting

A domain is the address; hosting is the service that stores your website files and database. You can buy them together, but buying a domain alone does not publish a website.

Replacing DNS records without a plan

Changing nameservers can affect an existing website or email setup. Note the current settings first, then enter the new provider’s values exactly. If you only need to point one service, changing a specific DNS record may be safer than replacing all nameservers.

FAQ

How much does it cost to buy a domain name in India?

It depends on the extension and the registrar. At HostKarle, .co.in is ₹709/yr, .in is ₹889/yr and .com is ₹1,259/yr; check the current cart before paying and compare renewal prices as well.

Is .in or .com better for an Indian business?

Choose .in when most customers are in India and choose .com when you want a familiar global address or expect to sell outside India. Neither choice replaces good branding, clear website content or reliable contact details.

Can I buy a domain without hosting?

Yes. You can register the domain, keep it in your client area and connect it to hosting later. When you are ready, update the nameservers or DNS records supplied by your hosting provider.

Can I buy a domain by UPI?

Yes. Add the domain to the cart, create your account, choose Razorpay or Cashfree, select UPI and approve the payment in your UPI app. Check the invoice status before trying to pay again if the bank confirmation is slow.

Can I buy a .gov.in domain like a normal .in domain?

No. .gov.in has eligibility and registration requirements for government organisations. Follow the NIC’s official gov.in procedure rather than using the normal commercial domain checkout.
