To install wordpress directadmin on a new hosting account, use Softaculous to create the site, database and administrator account in one guided process. This guide covers the root-domain choice, SSL, first WordPress settings, verification and the manual method if your panel does not show the one-click installer.
What you need before installing
Why this matters: WordPress can only finish the installation when the domain, hosting account and server requirements are ready.
Prepare these items before opening DirectAdmin:
- An active domain: Decide whether WordPress should open at
example.com,www.example.com, or a subdirectory such asexample.com/blog. The domain must already be added to the hosting account. - DirectAdmin login details: Keep your hosting-panel username and password ready. You can open the DirectAdmin panel from your hosting client area or the panel URL supplied by your host.
- A site name and admin email: The site title can be changed later, but use an email inbox you check because WordPress uses it for important notices and password recovery.
- A unique administrator username and strong password: Do not use
admin, your domain name or a password reused for email, UPI or another service. Save the password in a password manager. - A decision about HTTPS: Use
https://only after an SSL certificate is active for the domain. Current WordPress requirements recommend HTTPS, PHP 8.3 or greater, and MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater.
If you are using HostKarle, its WordPress hosting plans use DirectAdmin and include Softaculous one-click installation, free SSL, a PHP selector and free migration. See the HostKarle WordPress hosting plans if you still need an account, or compare the DirectAdmin hosting plans first.
This is the DirectAdmin version of the workflow. The older WordPress installation guide for cPanel shared hosting is useful only when your current account actually uses that panel.
Step 1: Open Softaculous in DirectAdmin
Why this matters: Softaculous prepares the WordPress files and database for you, so you do not have to create wp-config.php by hand for a normal new installation.
- Sign in to your DirectAdmin account.
- Stay at the account or User Level view. If DirectAdmin opens at another level, switch to the user account that owns the domain.
- Find Softaculous Auto Installer, Softaculous Apps Installer or a similar Softaculous link. The exact label can differ slightly between DirectAdmin skins.
- Open Softaculous and search for WordPress. Select the WordPress application, then choose Install.
Softaculous documents the same sequence: open the control panel, select Softaculous, search for WordPress and click Install. Its official WordPress installation guide also lists the fields covered by the form.

Success looks like: you can see a WordPress installation form with fields for the protocol, domain, directory, site details and administrator account.
Step 2: Choose the domain and installation directory
Why this matters: the directory field decides whether visitors see WordPress at the main domain or after an extra path.
In the Softaculous form, set the installation URL carefully:
- Choose the protocol. Select
https://when the domain’s SSL certificate is already active. Selecthttp://only as a temporary choice while you are waiting for SSL; change the site to HTTPS before launch. - Choose the domain. Select the exact domain or subdomain where this WordPress site should live.
- Leave “In Directory” blank for the main domain. A blank field installs WordPress at
https://example.com/. If you enterblog, the site will open athttps://example.com/blog/. - Use a new or empty directory. Do not install into a folder that already contains another WordPress site or important files.
For example, use these values for a normal business website:
| Softaculous field | Value | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | https:// | The site uses an encrypted connection |
| Domain | example.com | WordPress uses this domain |
| In Directory | Leave blank | The homepage is https://example.com/ |
If you want a blog alongside an existing website, enter blog in In Directory instead. Softaculous confirms that the directory should be blank when WordPress belongs in the document root.
Success looks like: the preview or installation URL shown by Softaculous matches the address you want to share with visitors.
Step 3: Fill in the WordPress installation form
Why this matters: these fields become your site identity, administrator login and language settings.
Complete the form from top to bottom. Some fields may be under headings such as Site Settings, Admin Account, Language and Advanced Options.
- Site Name: Enter the business, blog or project name. Avoid stuffing keywords into this field.
- Site Description: Add a short description if you already know it. You can edit it later under Settings → General.
- Enable Multisite: Leave this off unless you specifically need a network of WordPress sites and understand its domain and user-management requirements.
- Admin Username: Create a name that is not
adminand does not expose your full name or domain. This is the account used forwp-admin. - Admin Password: Generate a long, unique password. Do not copy the hosting-panel password into this field.
- Admin Email: Use an inbox you can access now. Check it for password-reset and installation messages.
- Select Language: Choose the language you want in the WordPress dashboard. This setting does not prevent you from publishing content in another language.
- Version and plugins: Keep the current stable version selected by Softaculous. Do not add optional plugins until you know you need them; a smaller first install is easier to check.
- Advanced Options: You can normally keep the database name, table prefix and automated settings at their defaults. If you are installing beside an existing database, use a distinct table prefix and confirm the database choice before continuing.
Review the domain, directory, admin username and email once more. Click Install only after those four items are correct. Softaculous will create the database, copy the WordPress files and show the site and administrator URLs when it finishes.
Success looks like: Softaculous shows a completion message with a link to the site and a link similar to https://example.com/wp-admin/.
Step 4: Confirm SSL and log in to wp-admin
Why this matters: HTTPS protects the login page and prevents you from building a site on an address that later changes from HTTP to HTTPS.
- Open the site link supplied by Softaculous in a new browser tab.
- Check that the address begins with
https://and that the browser does not show a certificate warning. - Open the administrator link, normally
https://your-domain.com/wp-admin/. - Sign in with the WordPress administrator username and password created in Step 3.
If SSL is not active, open Account Manager → SSL Certificates in DirectAdmin, or the equivalent SSL option in your panel skin. Select the Let’s Encrypt certificate option if it is available, request the certificate for the domain and wait until the status shows it is active. Then return to the site using https://.
HostKarle plans include free auto-renewing Let’s Encrypt SSL. That means you should check the certificate status and use the secure URL; you should not buy a second certificate for a normal site on the plan.
If you accidentally installed with http://, do not change the URLs randomly in the database. First confirm that HTTPS works, then update Settings → General so both WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) use the same https:// address.
Success looks like: the homepage and /wp-admin/ load over HTTPS, the login succeeds, and the browser does not redirect repeatedly between HTTP and HTTPS.
Step 5: Change the first WordPress settings
Why this matters: a few small changes remove the most common launch mistakes before you publish pages or share the URL.
Work through this short checklist in the WordPress dashboard:
- Open Settings → General and confirm the site title, administration email, timezone and both site URLs.
- Open Settings → Permalinks, select Post name, and click Save Changes. This gives posts readable URLs and refreshes the rewrite rules.
- Open Settings → Reading and check the search-engine visibility setting. For a public site, leave the box that discourages search engines unchecked. For a private build, you may enable it temporarily and turn it off before launch.
- Open Users → Profile and confirm the display name. Keep the administrator account for administration and create a separate author account if another person will write regularly.
- Remove the sample post, sample page and unused themes or plugins only after checking that you do not need them.
- Visit Dashboard → Updates and apply available updates one at a time. Take a self-service backup first when your hosting panel provides backup and restore tools.
For a new site, choose a lightweight theme, create a homepage and test one contact method before promoting the URL. If you are moving an existing site instead, use the WordPress migration guide for HostKarle rather than installing over the old files. For the next stage, see how to optimise and secure a WordPress website.
Success looks like: the site title is correct, clean permalinks work, HTTPS remains enabled, and you can log in again after opening the homepage in a private browser window.
Verify the installation before publishing
Open the homepage and test the site as a visitor, not only while logged in. Use this order:
- Open the homepage in a private or incognito window.
- Click one menu link and one internal link.
- Open a sample post or page and confirm its permalink works.
- Upload a small test image through Media → Add New, then insert it into a draft.
- Submit a test form or send a test message if the site has a contact form.
- Log out and sign in to
/wp-admin/again. - Check the site on a phone-sized browser window.
If all seven checks pass, the WordPress installation is ready for theme, page and content work. Keep your hosting-panel credentials, WordPress admin password and backup details private.
Troubleshooting DirectAdmin WordPress installs
Softaculous is not visible
Search the DirectAdmin home page for Softaculous, Apps Installer or WordPress. If none appears, your account may not include an application installer or it may be placed behind a different user level; check the hosting plan or ask the provider which installer is available. You can use the manual method below when you have database and file access.
The domain is missing from the list
The domain may not yet be added to the hosting account, or DNS and account setup may still be in progress. Return to DirectAdmin’s domain-management area, confirm the spelling, and make sure you are installing from the account that owns the domain.
The site shows an SSL warning
Open the SSL section in DirectAdmin and confirm that the certificate covers the exact domain you selected, including www if you use it. Do not enter administrator passwords on a warning page. Wait until the certificate is active, then use the HTTPS installation URL.
WordPress opens at the wrong address
Check whether In Directory was filled in and whether you selected the correct domain. Then compare the two URLs under Settings → General; both should use the same protocol, domain and path. If this is a migrated site, inspect the database and old URL replacements carefully before changing anything.
“Error establishing a database connection” appears
With a Softaculous install, first check that the installation completed and that you opened the correct domain. With a manual install, verify the database name, database username, password and database host in wp-config.php, and confirm that the user has privileges on that database. WordPress’s manual installation documentation explains these fields and the standard recovery checks.
The homepage works but a post returns 404
Sign in to WordPress, open Settings → Permalinks, and click Save Changes without changing anything. This refreshes the rewrite rules. If the issue continues, check that the domain points to the correct document root and that the installation is not inside an unintended subdirectory.
Manual WordPress installation in DirectAdmin
Use this route when Softaculous is unavailable or when you need full control over the files and database. It takes longer and requires more careful checking, but the underlying process is the same as the official WordPress sequence.
- Download the latest WordPress package from the official WordPress download page, then extract it on your computer.
- In DirectAdmin, open MySQL Management or the database section and create a new database and database user. Record the database name, username, password and database-host value shown by the panel.
- Open File Manager and go to the document root for the selected domain. For a main domain this is commonly a
public_html-type folder, but use the path shown by your host. - Upload the contents of the extracted
wordpressfolder into that document root. To install in/blog/, upload the folder contents into ablogdirectory instead. - Copy
wp-config-sample.phptowp-config.phpand enter the database name, user, password and host. Add unique authentication keys and salts, or let the WordPress setup screen create the configuration when prompted. - Visit
https://your-domain.com/for a root install orhttps://your-domain.com/blog/for a subdirectory install. If WordPress asks for setup details, enter the site title, administrator username, password and email. - Enable HTTPS after the certificate is active, then repeat the first-settings and verification checklists above.
Do not guess the database host or upload the wordpress folder one level too deep. If the files are at public_html/wordpress/ but you expect the site at the root domain, move the contents up or use the correct /wordpress/ URL.
FAQ
Can I install WordPress in DirectAdmin without Softaculous?
Yes. Create a database and user, upload the WordPress files, configure wp-config.php, and open the installation URL in your browser. Softaculous is quicker for a normal new site, while the manual method gives you more control over each step.
Should the DirectAdmin installation directory be blank?
Leave it blank when WordPress should open at the root domain, such as https://example.com/. Enter a folder name such as blog only when you want the site at https://example.com/blog/.
Do I need SSL before installing WordPress?
You can technically install first, but activating SSL before you choose the installation URL avoids later URL and redirect changes. Use https:// in Softaculous after the certificate is active.
Where do I log in after installing WordPress?
For a root installation, open https://your-domain.com/wp-admin/. For a site installed in a folder called blog, use https://your-domain.com/blog/wp-admin/; Softaculous also shows the administrator link after installation.
Does DirectAdmin work with WordPress?
Yes. WordPress needs compatible PHP, a supported MySQL or MariaDB database and HTTPS support; it does not require a particular hosting-panel brand. DirectAdmin plus Softaculous provides the account, database and one-click installation tools needed for a standard setup.
