IP address lookup

What each line of the result means

An IP address on its own is just a number. Three public sources turn it into a network, a place and a name: the internet's routing table, the regional registries, and DNS.

1

ASN and network

Every block of public addresses is announced to the rest of the internet by one network, identified by an AS number. That network is the ISP, cloud or hosting company actually routing the address today.

2

Registered owner

The regional registry (APNIC for India and Asia) records who holds the block. It is usually the same company as the network; when it differs, the holder has leased the addresses to someone else.

3

Reverse DNS

The owner can attach a hostname to each address. Mail servers and hosting servers usually have a meaningful one; home broadband addresses get a generic name or none.

Domain IP lookup

Type a domain instead of an IP and we resolve it first. A site can have several IPv4 and IPv6 addresses; we show all of them. Large sites on a CDN return addresses near our server, not the origin, so for "who hosts this site" use the hosting checker, which also reads the nameservers.

When people use a bulk IP lookup

Website owners paste the top IPs from an access log to see whether a traffic spike is real visitors, a search engine, or a single data centre hammering the login page. Email admins check where spam is coming from. Security teams sort firewall hits by country before deciding what to block. If you host with HostKarle and see attacks in your logs, send us the list; we help you block the networks behind them.

Your own IP

Need the address you are browsing from? It is on What is my IP, with your ISP and AS number. For a network's full list of IP ranges, use the ASN lookup.

What does an IP lookup show?

For any public IP address it shows the network that owns it and its AS number, the IP prefix it belongs to, the country and approximate city, the reverse DNS hostname, and the organisation and address range registered at the regional internet registry (APNIC, ARIN, RIPE, LACNIC or AFRINIC).

How do I find the IP address of a domain?

Type the domain, for example example.in, into the box above. We look up its A (IPv4) and AAAA (IPv6) records in DNS, the same way a browser does, and then show the network and location of each address. If the domain shows Cloudflare, the site is behind Cloudflare's proxy and its real server is hidden; the hosting checker explains more.

How do I look up many IP addresses at once?

Switch to bulk IP lookup, paste up to 100 addresses (one per line, or separated by spaces or commas) and press Look up. You get a table with the AS number, network, country and city of each, and you can download it as a CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets.

Why does it say "private address" and show nothing?

Addresses such as 10.x.x.x, 172.16–31.x.x, 192.168.x.x and IPv6 addresses starting with fd or fe80 are private: they exist only inside a home, office or data-centre network, and thousands of networks reuse the same ones. There is no owner or location to look up. Your public address is on What is my IP.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Country is right for the vast majority of addresses. City is an estimate: Indian mobile operators route traffic through a few large hubs, so a phone in Patna can show Kolkata or Delhi. Hosting and cloud servers are usually placed correctly. No IP lookup can give a street address or a person's name.

Is this IP lookup free? Is there a limit?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up. To stop automated scraping, each visitor gets about 40 lookups in any 10 minutes; a bulk lookup of 100 IPs counts as 6. If you reach the limit, wait a few minutes.

Where does the data come from?

AS numbers and prefixes come from iptoasn.com, built from global BGP routing tables; locations come from DB-IP's free IP-to-City database; both are refreshed weekly on our server. The registered owner of a single IP is fetched live from the regional internet registry over RDAP.
