Who runs .in
.in is India's country-code top-level domain. The registry is operated by NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, a not-for-profit company set up under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Registrars such as ours sell the names; NIXI keeps the master list and sets the policy.
Who can register
Anyone. You do not need a registered company, a GST number or an office address to buy a .in, and individuals register them every day. What you must give is correct contact details, because the registrant named on the domain is its legal owner and the registry can act on false data.
The family of Indian names
Besides the plain .in, NIXI runs second-level names such as .co.in, .net.in, .org.in, .firm.in, .gen.in and .ind.in, which are open to everyone. A few are restricted to eligible bodies: .gov.in for government, .ac.in and .edu.in for education, .res.in for research institutions. Of these we sell .in, .co.in and .org.in.
Disputes
If someone registers a .in that copies your trademark, the complaint goes through INDRP, the .IN Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy run by NIXI. It is the Indian counterpart of the UDRP used for .com. It works in both directions, so check that a name is not someone else's brand before you buy it.
WHOIS details
The free WHOIS privacy we give on .com, .net and .org is not available on .in. NIXI decides what the public .in WHOIS record shows, so treat the contact details you enter as something the registry holds, and use a business email address rather than a personal one if you prefer.
