MAC address lookup — find the vendor behind any MAC

Type a MAC address or just its first 6 digits (the OUI) to see the manufacturer, its IEEE block, and whether the address is a factory one or a randomized phone MAC. Paste up to 100 at once. Free, no sign-up.

Reading a MAC address

What the lookup tells you

A MAC address is 48 bits, written as 12 hex digits. The first half says who made the network card; two bits in the first byte say what kind of address it is.

Vendor (OUI)

The company the IEEE assigned the block to: Apple, Samsung, Realme, Cisco, TP-Link, Intel and some 40,000 others. Handy for working out what an unknown device on your Wi-Fi is.

Block size

MA-L (24-bit), MA-M (28-bit) or MA-S (36-bit). Small makers share a prefix with others, so the tool matches the longest block first and names the right company.

Randomized MAC

Phones and laptops now invent a private MAC per Wi-Fi network. These have the "local" bit set and no vendor. The tool says so instead of returning "unknown".

Unicast or multicast

The lowest bit of the first byte. Odd first byte = a group address (broadcast, IPv4/IPv6 multicast, spanning tree), never one device's own address.

Every format

The same address with colons, hyphens, Cisco dots or no separators, upper or lower case — copy whichever your router, switch or firewall wants.

IPv6 link-local

The fe80:: address a device builds from its MAC with EUI-64. For the full conversion, with your own prefix, use the MAC to IPv6 converter.

MAC address format

MAC address formats, and which system uses which

The 12 digits never change; only the way they are grouped does. The lookup accepts all of these and gives the address back in each one.

FormatExampleUsed by
Colon, 6 groups of 200:1a:2b:3c:4d:5eLinux, macOS, Android, most routers, IEEE 802 "canonical" form
Hyphen, 6 groups of 200-1A-2B-3C-4D-5EWindows (ipconfig, getmac), IEEE registry listings
Dot, 3 groups of 4001a.2b3c.4d5eCisco IOS, some HP/Aruba switches
Bare, no separators001A2B3C4D5EDatabases, licence files, DHCP and RADIUS configs

Upper or lower case?

It makes no difference to the network: 00:1A:2B and 00:1a:2b are the same address. Some software compares MACs as plain text, though, so a MAC filter or DHCP reservation may only match if you use the case it expects. Copy the format your device shows in its own settings.

The OUI is the first six digits

In 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E, 00:1A:2B is the organisationally unique identifier (OUI) and 3C:4D:5E is the serial number the maker gave this one card. For MA-M and MA-S blocks the vendor part is longer (7 or 9 digits) and the serial part shorter.

Private Wi-Fi address

Why your phone's MAC address keeps changing

If a lookup returns "randomized", nothing is wrong. Here is what is going on and when it matters.

Every Wi-Fi device used to broadcast the same factory MAC everywhere it went, which let shops, malls and airports track people by their phone. Since Android 10, iOS 14 and Windows 10, devices use a random "private" or "randomized" MAC for each network instead. The random address always has the locally administered bit set, so its second hex digit is 2, 6, A or E (for example 3E:9B:41:7C:20:D5 or A6:…).

That causes trouble in one place: networks that recognise devices by MAC. A router's MAC filter, a DHCP reservation, a hostel or office captive portal, or parental controls can all lose track of a phone when its address changes. The fix is to turn off Private address (iPhone: Settings › Wi-Fi › ⓘ) or set MAC address type to "Phone MAC" (Android: Wi-Fi › network › Privacy) for that one network.

Virtual machines, Docker containers and VPN adapters also use locally administered MACs; those are not random, just chosen by software.

What does a MAC address lookup tell me?

The first half of a MAC address is a block number that the IEEE assigns to a manufacturer. The lookup matches that block against the IEEE's public registry and returns the company it was given to, its registered address and the block size. It also reads two bits in the first byte that say whether the address is unicast or multicast, and whether it is a factory (universal) address or one set by software (local), which is how randomized phone MACs are spotted.

Can I find a device's location or owner from its MAC address?

No. A MAC address only identifies the network card's manufacturer, not the person or the place. It never leaves the local network: websites, apps and your internet provider see your IP address, not your MAC. Your own router knows which MAC has which local IP, and that is the only place to match a MAC to a device in your home or office.

Why does my phone's MAC address show no vendor?

Because it is randomized. Android 10 and later, iOS 14 and later and Windows 10/11 use a made-up "private" MAC for each Wi-Fi network so you cannot be tracked from shop to shop. These addresses have the locally administered bit set (the second hex digit is 2, 6, A or E), so they are not in any vendor list. The tool labels them as randomized. Turn off "private address" for that network if you need the real one.

How do I find the MAC address of my computer or phone?

Windows: run getmac /v or ipconfig /all and read "Physical Address". macOS: hold Option and click the Wi-Fi icon, or run ifconfig en0. Linux: ip link. Android: Settings › About phone › Status (or Wi-Fi › network › Advanced). iPhone: Settings › General › About › Wi-Fi Address. A router's "connected devices" page lists every device's MAC.

What MAC address formats does the tool accept?

All the common ones: colon-separated (00:1a:2b:3c:4d:5e, Linux and macOS), hyphen-separated (00-1A-2B-3C-4D-5E, Windows), Cisco dotted (001a.2b3c.4d5e) and bare (001A2B3C4D5E), in upper or lower case. You can also type only the first 6 hex digits (the OUI) to find the vendor. Each result shows the address in every format, so the tool doubles as a MAC address format converter.

Why does my Jio, Airtel or other ISP router show a different company name?

Internet providers rarely make their own hardware. JioFiber, Airtel Xstream and BSNL routers, JioFi hotspots and many phones are built by contract manufacturers, and the MAC address carries the block of whoever made the device or its network chip. So a lookup on a Jio router names the factory, not Jio. The same goes for phone brands that buy Wi-Fi modules from another company.

What are MA-L, MA-M and MA-S?

They are the three block sizes the IEEE sells. MA-L (formerly "OUI") is a 24-bit prefix and covers 16.7 million addresses, for big manufacturers. MA-M is a 28-bit prefix with about 1 million addresses, and MA-S (formerly OUI-36, also IAB) is a 36-bit prefix with 4,096, for small makers of industrial and embedded devices. The tool checks the longest match first, so a small block inside a shared prefix is credited to the right company.

How up to date is the vendor list?

It is a copy of the IEEE Registration Authority's MA-L, MA-M, MA-S, IAB and CID registries, last imported on 16 October 2026 (59,003 blocks). New blocks are assigned every week, so a brand-new device may not be listed yet.

Is this MAC lookup free? Is there a limit?

Yes, it is free and needs no sign-up. You can look up one address or paste up to 100 at once. To stop scraping, each visitor can run about 40 lookups in 10 minutes.
