Who runs .net
.net is one of the original generic top-level domains, introduced in 1985 alongside .com and .org. Its registry is operated by Verisign, the same company that runs .com, under a contract with ICANN.
Who can register
Anyone. The early idea that .net was only for network providers was never enforced as a rule, and today any person or business can register one with no documents. You provide correct owner contact details, and the domain is yours for as long as you renew it.
Transfer and lock rules
Because .net follows ICANN's transfer policy, a newly registered or newly transferred .net is locked against another registrar transfer for 60 days. You need the EPP (authorisation) code from the current registrar to move it.
Disputes
Trademark complaints about .net names are handled under the UDRP, the same process used for .com. Buying the .net of a brand you do not own, hoping to sell it back, is exactly what the UDRP exists to stop.
