Who runs .org
.org is one of the original generic top-level domains from 1985. Its registry is operated by Public Interest Registry (PIR), a non-profit set up by the Internet Society, under a contract with ICANN.
Who can register
Anyone. .org was meant for organisations that did not fit .com or .net, but it has never required proof of non-profit status. A trust does not need to show its registration certificate, and an individual can register a .org for a personal project.
.org or .org.in?
Indian organisations sometimes choose .org.in, a second-level name under India's .in, run by NIXI. It signals an Indian organisation; .org is better known and works for an international audience. We sell both; the .org.in is currently ₹709 a year.
Transfers and disputes
Like .com and .net, a .org follows ICANN's transfer policy: it is locked against another registrar transfer for 60 days after registration or a transfer, and you need its EPP code to move it. Name disputes go through the UDRP.
WHOIS privacy
WHOIS privacy is included free on .org. A trust's official address may be public anyway, but a founder's personal phone number and home address do not need to be, so they stay hidden.
