The favicon set every site needs

You no longer need the dozens of icon files generators used to produce. Five lines in the head cover browsers, Google, iPhone and Android.

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="48x48">
<link rel="icon" href="/icon.svg" type="image/svg+xml">
<link rel="icon" href="/icon-32.png" type="image/png" sizes="32x32">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">   <!-- 180×180 -->
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">            <!-- 192 + 512 icons -->

Tips

  • Start from a square master of at least 512×512 px, and simplify the logo: at 16 px only a letter or a bold mark survives.
  • Keep favicon.ico at the site root even if you declare PNG or SVG icons; many tools still ask for it directly.
  • Give the apple-touch-icon a solid background; iOS fills transparency with black.
  • For Android "maskable" icons, keep the logo inside the central 80% safe zone.
  • Browsers cache favicons hard. After changing it, add a version (/favicon.ico?v=2) or test in a private window.

What is a favicon?

What favicon sizes do I need?

A sensible set today: favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px inside; a 32×32 or SVG icon declared with rel="icon"; a 180×180 PNG apple-touch-icon; and 192×192 and 512×512 PNGs in a web manifest. Google Search asks for at least 48×48 px, or a multiple of it.

Why is my favicon not showing in Google?

Google needs to crawl both your homepage and the icon file. Check that the icon is declared with <link rel="icon"> on the homepage, is square and at least 48×48 px, loads with 200 OK, and is not blocked by robots.txt. After a change it can take days or weeks for Google to update it.

How do I add a favicon in WordPress?

Go to Appearance → Customize → Site Identity and upload a square image of at least 512×512 px as the Site Icon. WordPress then creates the icon sizes and adds the tags for you. Run this checker afterwards to confirm everything loads.
