Getting link previews right

In India most links are shared on WhatsApp first. A link with a clear image and title gets far more taps than a bare address, and it takes five tags to get there.

1

The five that matter

og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and twitter:card. Everything else is optional polish.

2

One image per page

Make a 1200×630 image for important pages and posts. Use absolute https:// addresses and keep the file small so WhatsApp loads it on mobile data.

3

Test, then refresh caches

Check the live page here, then use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to clear old previews after a change.

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph tags are <meta property="og:…"> lines in a page's head that tell Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Telegram, Slack and others what to show when someone shares the link: the title, a short description, an image and the site name. Without them, each platform guesses, often picking the wrong image or none.

Do I also need Twitter card tags?

Only one is essential: twitter:card, which tells X (Twitter) which layout to use. X reads og:title, og:description and og:image when twitter: versions are absent. The generator adds both sets so every platform gets exactly what you typed.

What size should the og:image be?

1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio), as a JPG or PNG under about 1 MB. Keep important text away from the edges, because some apps crop the image to a square. Always use a full https:// address for the image.

Why does WhatsApp or Facebook still show the old preview?

Platforms cache link previews, sometimes for days. On Facebook, open the Sharing Debugger and click "Scrape again". On LinkedIn use the Post Inspector. WhatsApp updates on its own after a while; adding a harmless query string such as ?v=2 to the link forces a fresh preview.

How do I add these tags in WordPress?

SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO and Rank Math add Open Graph and Twitter tags automatically and let you set a custom title, description and image per post under their "Social" tab. Without a plugin, paste the generated code into your theme's header (inside <head>) or use a header-code plugin.

Is the OG tags generator free?

Yes. Generating tags runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Checking a live URL fetches the page on our server and is limited to a fair number of checks per visitor every 10 minutes.
